This organ of the XVIIth century, built in 1675 by the English organ builder HEW, was transported in the new cathedral and then restored and fitted out (addition of a keyboard) in 1776 by Jean-Pierre Cavaillé who provided his maintenance until the Revolution.

The organ which did not work any more since the end of the XIXth century was again restored between 1914 and 1917.

This restoration was, in fact, a real reconstruction which increased the number of stops of the organ from 28 to 50, and transformed its action system.
So that the instrument became very quickly unplayable .

Fortunately, a great part of the pipes of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries had been preserved and was able, with the case, to be of used as a basis to the historical reconstitution of the "restoration - reconstruction" as close as possible of the original organ.
Flutes 16 ' and Bombard 16 ' in the Pedal are not stops of the original instrument but were added to allow the playing of a vaster repertoire.

These stops were placed behind the case.
